"Le Mas des Platanes" Estate

A bit of geography

The Mas des Platanes is located in the town of Valréas.
With three other towns in the canton (Grillon, Richerences and Visan), Valréas constitutes an enclave of the Vaucluse department (84) within the Drôme department (26) and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
A bit of history
The history of the Enclave of the Popes began in the 14th century. In 1309, the popes settled in Avignon, then the capital of Christendom. In 1316, Pope John XXII, newly elected, traveled through the region for his enthronement in Lyon. On the way back, he fell ill in Valréas. The miracle cure?
A local wine…
After his recovery, the Pope, convinced of a divine sign, bought Valréas and its vineyards. His successors, also seduced, acquired Richerenches, Visan, and Grillon.
Thus was born the Enclave of the Popes, a territory under papal administration.
